The U.S. military helped the Oshkosh Corporation win a battle in the marketplace. The company reported a profit of $140 million from July through September, up from $54 million at the same time a year ago. The new gains helped offset major losses from a few months ago. Oshkosh stockholders made $1.68 per share in the fourth quarter of its fiscal year. That’s up from 72 cents the year before. But sales for the quarter dropped from $1.8 billion last year, to $1.5 billion this time. That’s because a series of military vehicle contracts were not enough to offset a sales drop for other Oshkosh vehicles, like construction units. And for the entire fiscal year, Oshkosh lost $1 billion due to the decline in non-military business. But CEO Robert Bohn says the company is extremely busy now. They’ve been ramping up their factories to achieve a goal of making 1,000 new and improved military all-terrain vehicles per month by December. Those vehicles are being used by American troops in Afghanistan.
