A former head of a Wisconsin Rapids credit union has committed suicide, 3-and-a-half months after he was charged with embezzling $634,000. 50-year-old David Henke missed a federal court appearance Monday in Madison. So Judge Barbara Crabb issued a warrant for Henke’s arrest. And Wood County sheriff’s deputies found him dead in his vehicle as they were about to serve the warrant. Coroner Garry Kronstedt ruled the death a suicide and did not order an autopsy. Henke was the president of the Rapids Municipal Credit Union, which served Wisconsin Rapids city and school district employees plus those at a hospital and nursing home. A federal grand jury indicted Henke in July on 20 counts of embezzlement and bank fraud for taking credit union funds between November of 1999 and last October. Another credit union took over the operation, and helped those who lost money get it replaced.
