Bill Endorsed Would Have Taxpayers Cover High Court Campaigns

Published on November 3, 2009 (2 weeks, 3 days ago)

Taxpayers would cover the costs of State Supreme Court campaigns under a bill endorsed Tuesday by the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee. The vote was 11 to 4, with Democrats voting yes and Republicans in opposition. Income tax filers would contribute through a voluntary check off on their returns, and the state’s general fund would cover the rest. Each election would cost around $3.5 million. Supporters say public financing would eliminate the perception that justice is bought by special interests and campaign donors. Opponents say public financing would minimize the debate voters need to make an informed choice. The bill goes to the full Legislature on Thursday.
